 "What They Learned"

A letter to Julie Kenney from Hallie Hays and Serenity

Julie,

Thank you for allowing me to participate in the program On Eagles Wings

This program opened my eyes so any choices and opportunities for help as assessments. I found out my rights, my responsibilities to stand up for my daughter and myself. I was given information about schools, community programs and activities for my family.

I learned about workshops, agencies where   I can get help with living needs, daily needs, life style changes I can make and how to change things for the better. When Jerry [Jerry Mellum Hennepin County] came and shared the names and numbers of different services.  Jerry told me which ones fit my needs. He told me how to state my case.

I learned how to make my case when I have a concern. I learned that it only takes one person to start a change.  I don't have to wait on others to decide to help or back me.  I can go to my legislator when I have a problem, speak to her without fear or concern about not being heard or understood.  She is a real person with problems just like me.  She lives where I live.  She deals with the same issues every night in our community.

Again, Julie I want to thank you for affirming me so that I can get the support and maintain my child's needs, strengthen my ability to function in this multicultural changing society.

You have given me a chance to gain knowledge of choices and control my life and my family's future.

Thank You.

Hallie Hays and Serenity my daughter
